This morning our older students were thrilled when they learned that they would be able to continue working on the two houses on Alvar Street where they had labored on Tuesday. Virginia, Mary Fowler, and Molly had a bird's eye view of the neighborhood from their perch on the roof. Anne Grace carried Katelin piggyback-style so they could get the painter's tape off the exterior windows. Katherine and Emilee were given props by our site manager for their perfect stair stringers. Nathan and Stephen were very proud of the wall they built. Rachel, the two Hannahs, Chaney, and Bryan cut and installed siding. Emily, Alyssa, Jill & Lacy took down siding. Ben hammered while lying in the rafters. Our site managers appreciated the eagerness with which all of these students served.

Meanwhile, our 7th and 8th graders were transported via a pink casino bus by a Habitat coordinator to a site several miles away, where a couple of other Habitat houses have been constructed. Since these homes are no longer active construction zones, younger students are allowed to be on site to do cleanup work. Some of our girls cleaned windows inside one of the houses, while the rest of the crew took an inventory of one of Habitat's storage containers on the street. In contrast to the Musician's Village area, this neighborhood appeared to be almost totally void of residents.

We wish you could have seen Mark Edwards do his "This Old House" parody for the video camera, which included a saw safety demonstration. He is truly a man of many talents!

We left our Habitat sites at 11:30 AM to return to Celebration Church to eat lunch and clean up in preparation for our mid-afternoon departure for First Baptist Mandeville, where our students will do a concert tonight.

Getting to First Baptist Mandeville proved to be a bit trickier than we had expected. As we crossed the causeway over Lake Ponchartrain, we noticed ominous clouds on the horizon. As soon as we entered Mandeville, the bottom dropped out. As has become our custom, we did not travel directly to our destination but journeyed an extra mile or two. We are getting used to backing up and making U-turns in these busses.

Once we finally safely arrived up at the church and began to unload the handbells from the cargo van, we discovered to our dismay that the back door of the van had leaked during the storm, and some of the bell cases and foam pieces were wet. As the Chapel Ringers set up their tables and bells in the sanctuary, Trey and Tambi mopped out the van with paper towels.

We ate hamburgers and hot dogs at FBC Mandeville's Wednesday night supper prior to the concert. About 80 folks were in attendance, including some students from FBC New Orleans. Once again, our students led worship well, and they received a standing ovation for their effort. You are in for a treat at the home concert on Sunday night! The crowd also applauded our students for being willing to come to New Orleans to help with the rebuilding process. Parents, thank you for sending your students on this trip!
